What Is Road Rage?
Road rage occurs when one or more driver becomes angry and begins to retaliate against each other, examples include:
- Yelling
- Hand Gestures
- Tailgating
- Speeding
- Swerving
- Bumping/Ramming
- Excessive Honking
- Brake Checking
- Blocking Lanes
- Confrontation
Preventing Road Rage
While it is impossible to control other drivers around you, there are certainly preventative measures that can be taken to avoid road rage incidents. If you find yourself in a road rage situation, we recommend contacting 911 immediately and not engaging with the other driver.
Don’t Assume
We often become irritated when we assume someone is just going slow for fun, in this area, people may be lost, old or even experiencing mechanical problems. Try to nicely go around when possible.
Don’t Rush
When people get in a rush on the road, they tend to get more irritated. We recommend always leaving with enough time to get to your location, checking traffic reports prior to leaving can also be extremely useful. Take your time, follow the speed limit and arrive safely.
Don’t Tailgate
You should always have a safe distance between you and other drivers, especially if someone seems to be irritated already. Brake checking/slamming on the brakes actually result in quite a few motor accidents.
Don’t Retaliate
If you find yourself annoyed by another driver, try not to retaliate, this can often escalate further and further, resulting in accidents in and some cases, death. We recommend slowing down, getting off the road and completely avoiding the other driver if at all possible.
